A11009 Fairey Gannet COD.4 — 1:48 scale

Arguably the most unconventional Fairey aircraft to enter full production. The Gannet was developed in response to a 1945 Royal Navy requirement for a carrier-based turboprop anti-submarine aircraft.

Developed to counter the growing Soviet submarine threat at the start of the Cold War, the Gannet featured cutting-edge electronic detection equipment. Once an enemy submarine was detected, it could be marked, tracked and attacked with bombs, depth charges, rockets, and air-dropped acoustic torpedoes. Highly effective, it could attack both surfaced and submerged submarines.

Its distinctive Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba engine featured two side-by-side gas turbines sharing a common gearbox, each driving a coaxially mounted contra-rotating propeller. Its unique bi-fold wing system allowed it to be stored compactly aboard relatively small aircraft carriers.
